Increasing Environmental Responsibility
through Conservation & Waste Reduction Efforts
Energy, Electricity and Water Conservation:
Water Conservation: Mulch perennial and vegetable gardens, use of drought resistant perennial flowering plants, less frequent and shorter showers, consolidating laundry for larger loads.
Reduced carbon footprint by:
- Eliminating one of two vehicles, keeping the most fuel efficient and cargo capable of the two
- Home office = Minimize driving < 100 miles per week for necessary household errands and consolidating activities and errands when driving 15 miles or more
- Carpool with friends whenever possible
- Eliminated professional lawn care service and purchase fuel efficient push mower for minimal lawn mowing, reducing mowed area by allowing 4 to 8 feet of lawn edge at woods to grow wild, which encourages breeding birds and provides feed for birds and grazing deer
- Use hand garden tools instead of gas or electric powered weed whacker
- Electricity consumption reduced: fluorescent light bulbs replace most incandescent lights in the home and office, lights and computers turned off when not in use, energy saving appliances and on-demand hot water heater in place.
- Eliminated television in 2006
- Maximize use of natural lighting through passive solar and sheer draperies
- Summer cooling by opening windows throughout the house for natural night air to cool and then closing them to keep cool air in as long as possible during the day, using electric fans to maintain comfort
- Winter passive solar enhances radiant hot water heating and wood fired stove.
- Reduced natural gas consumption for heating by increasing use of wood stove and wearing layers of clothing in the home during the winter
- We support local farmers (within 100 miles) buying meats, produce and dairy, plus specialty items produced in VT
- We grow 100% organic vegetable and herb garden to supply 25% of summer diet
- Support local merchants whenever possible versus driving to big box stores for some items, thereby keeping money in local economy and saving fuel
- Receive paperless bill by email when practical, printing minimal info versus accepting junk merchant solicitations in bills by mail
- Use of fuel efficient gas grill versus stove year around for some cooking
Waste & Pollutant Reduction
- Compost all vegetable matter, tea bags and coffee grounds plus some white paper product
- Plan meals to optimize use of all leftovers
- Reduce meat consumption and consuming mostly goat and sheep dairy
- Recycle all newspaper, plastics, glass, paper, cardboard packaging, plastic bags AND support local redemption center with acceptable items for pay
- Electronic communications with all customers and clients
- 100% Environmentally friendly cleaning products and natural products such as vinegar and water
- Botanically based personal care items
